McCluskey: doubt over Toshiba’s future worrying news for nuclear jobs

Commenting on reports that Toshiba’s future is in doubt, after it filed unaudited accounts, Len McCluskey warned of serious concerns over the firm’s future involvement in the construction of the Moorside nuclear power station in Cumbria.

“Moorside is expected to generate 20,000 highly skilled jobs, jobs that are vital to the future of the communities that depend on them, as well as supplying severn per cent of the UK’s electricity needs from 2025.

“With Toshiba’s nuclear unit Westinghouse Electric Company, which was due to supply the reactors for Moorside, having already filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US, this piles on the uncertainty. I call again on the government to pledge public investment to ensure the project goes ahead, and on schedule.”
